Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller

Laughter logically follows this incisive social and political satire

Non Sequitur comes in both single comic panel and comic strip formats. It borrows its name from the Latin phrase “it does not follow”. There are no central character, theme, or setting that follow across the comics. What does follow is trenchant satire. Comic panel after comic panel. Comic strip after comic strip. It is this recurring top-notch humor that won Non Sequitur the distinction of being the only comic to win awards in both the best comic panel and best comic strip categories. It also won its Cartoonist, Wiley Miller, the most prestigious awards in Cartooning multiple times.

Non Sequitur offers a wry look at the absurdities of everyday life. It skewers everything from pop culture, relationships, aging, politics to religion. But it is obvious that its most acerbic wit is reserved for the legal system. Miller passes no opportunity or spares no effort in lampooning the legal profession. The self-serving nature of legal eagles, and, the ridiculousness of court procedures are brilliantly captured in many of his comics (strips). The next favorite target of his cartooning salvo are the Big Corporates with their fat-cat CEOS and predilection for financial shenanigans. He often takes sharp jabs at religion and politics also.

Miller’s cartooning style is distinctive with meticulous composition and detailed illustration. He pioneered the use of vibrant colors in comic strips. He is also credited with coming up with the vertical cartoon format that is now common.

Incisive social and political satire recurs in Non Sequitur. Read it. The laughs will logically follow. Especially if you hate Lawyers!
